The Virgins and ASCAP: Did A Performance Rights Organization Do Anything For Us?
In 1995 I moved back to my hometown of Milwaukee with a group of college friends to start a band. We called ourselves The Virgins. Over the next five years this name would prove to be somewhat prescient. We played hundreds of shows throughout the Midwest, recorded one six-song cassette and two CDs, and made a lot of naive assumptions.

Berklee News

Berklee College of Music, ParkARTS, Present Free Outdoor Jazz Concert Jazz at the Fort, at Roxbury's Highland Park, August 1

Performing at Jazz at the Fort will be Berklee graduate, jazz trumpeter Christian Scott '04, a rising-star who is already building a loyal following. After receiving a trumpet as a gift from his mother and grandmother at age 12, the New Orleans native began to explore his talents, under the tutelage of his uncle, modern jazz innovator, saxophonist Donald Harrison, Jr. (Berklee '80). Scott then attended the prestigious New Orleans Center for the Creative Arts (NOCCA). Other notable graduates of the school include Harrison, Harry Connick, Jr., the Marsalises, Terence Blanchard, and Nicholas Payton. Upon graduation, Scott received a full tuition scholarship to attend Berklee.

Now a member of Harrison's ensemble, Scott has performed throughout Europe, Asia and South, Central, and North America. He appears on Harrison's most recent release, Real Life Stories, and the soon-to-be-released, Kind of New, a tribute to Miles Davis' Kind of Blue. Recently, Scott was part of a top-rated student quintet selected by Executive Vice President Gary Burton that recorded an album of original music produced by Grammy-winning guitarist Pat Metheny.

Surrounded by newly restored Victorian homes and redbrick row houses, historic Highland Park was designed by Frederick Law Olmstead in 1895 on Fort Hill, the site of an impressive defensive fort during the Revolutionary War in 1775. The landmark site features a stunning white water standpipe tower built in 1869, which became an observation tower in 1906. The tower overlooks an expansive, panoramic view of Boston and serves as a spectacular performance backdrop. The park can comfortably accommodate an audience of 2,000 people.

Berklee College of Music was founded on the revolutionary principle that the best way to prepare students for careers in music was through the study and practice of contemporary music. For over half a century, the college has evolved constantly to reflect the state of the art of music and the music business. With over a dozen performance and nonperformance majors, a diverse and talented student body representing over 70 countries, and a music industry "who's who" of alumni, Berklee is the world's premier learning lab for the music of today - and tomorrow.
