Independent vs Commercial
Commercial ... sounds pretty one-sided, doesn't it? Commercial music holds all the cards: money, contacts, exposure, etc. Who is the typical music fan going to listen to? A band with a top10 single or a band with no record deal, no reputation, and no money?

Pat Metheny Winds Up Song's Nothing Conservatory About It Concert Series

BOSTON, April 20, 2004 Nine-time Grammy Award-winner Pat Metheny will perform at the Berklee Performance Center on Friday, April 30 at 8:15 p.m., the final concert in this year's Song's Nothing Conservatory About It concert series. Guitarist/composer/producer Metheny — one of Berklee College of Music's Herb Alpert Visiting Professors — is on campus throughout the week to produce a CD for a Berklee student quintet, handpicked and rehearsed by Berklee Executive Vice President Gary Burton.

The first half of the April 30 concert will be devoted to the performance of the music written and performed by the quintet — and produced by Metheny — throughout the week. Metheny is expected to perform with the quintet that night.

The second half of the concert will feature Metheny performing with his longtime friend and mentor, five-time Grammy winner and vibraphone master Gary Burton. The two have been friends for nearly 30 years – Metheny got his first major exposure as a member of Burton's band in the late 1970's – and this will be a rare chance to hear the two virtuosos, in duets, and supported by a top student rhythm section. Burton will retire from Berklee in August, after 33 years at his alma mater.
