Over the next five years this name would prove to be somewhat prescient. Berklee Alumni and Faculty Earn 25 Grammy Award Nominations ; Nominees Include Natalie Maines of the Dixie Chicks, Branford Marsalis, James Valentine of Maroon5, Steve Vai, Aimee Mann, and Howard Shore

December 15, 2005 — Nineteen Berklee alumni and three faculty members were nominated for a total of 25 GRAMMY® Awards by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences. The nominees were recognized for their outstanding contributions in a variety of categories, including pop, rock, metal, jazz, Latin jazz, hip hop, country music, film scoring, and for achievement in audio engineering/mixing, arranging, and art direction. The 48th Annual GRAMMY Awards will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 8, at Staples Center in Los Angeles, and broadcast on CBS at 8:00 p.m. (EST).

Natalie Maines '95 of the Dixie Chicks was nominated for two awards, in the categories Best Country Song, and Best Country Performance By a Duo or Group with Vocal, in which she won an award last year. James Valentine '96 of Maroon5, who won his first Grammy last year for Best New Artist, was nominated in the category Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals, in which he also earned a nomination at the 47th Grammy Awards.

Brian Garten '95 was also nominated for two awards, Record of the Year and Album of the Year, for his work mixing/engineering Mariah Carey. Other alumni nominated for their mixing/engineering work include Andrew Dawson '01, Record of the Year and Album of the Year for Kanye West; and Matt Marin '98, Album of the Year for Love. Angel. The Caribbean Jazz Project Featuring Dave Samuels – which includes Berklee faculty members Samuels, Oscar Stagnaro, and Mark Walker, and alumni Diego Urcola '90, and Dario Eskenazi '88 - was nominated in the category Best Latin Jazz Album.

In other jazz categories, Branford Marsalis '80, and Alan Broadbent '69 were nominated in the category Best Jazz Instrumental Solo, while Luciana Souza '88 and Tierney Sutton '87 are both up for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Drummer Antonio Sanchez '97 was nominated for Best Contemporary Jazz Album, for The Way Up by Pat Metheny Group.
