Mariana Bell Debut Performance At World Cafe Live On April 22
Folk Pop singer/songwriter Mariana Bell will be making her debut performance at the renowned World Cafe Live in Philadelphia on April 26th. Mariana, who will be opening for Philly-based Treehouse's Frank Stagliano, will be unveiling her new four song self-titled EP at the show. Tickets can be purchased online at the following link - http://tinyurl.com/r456e
"There's really no better venue to introduce my music to Philadelphia than World Cafe Live," remarked Mariana who has played most of the mainstay venues in New York City, including the Bitter End, Laila Lounge, The Living Room and Rockwood Music Hall.
Mariana was also selected to play the 1st Annual Texas Independent Musicians (T.I.M.) Showcase at the Troubadour Saloon during the 2006 South by Southwest (SXSW) music and film festival and conference in Austin.
Mariana will be following her SXSW gigs with her inaugural performance at Hollywood's Hotel Cafe (1623 1/2 N Cahuenga Blvd) on March 31, only to be invited to a private audition for hit CBS TV series ROCKSTAR the next day.
The Australian-born, Charlottesville-raised Mariana Bell has been a fixture at such popular New York venues as Caffe Vivaldi, Laila Lounge, The Bitter End, CBGB's and The Living Room. While her debut record, Dream of Italy, has been a consistently strong online seller through CD Baby, her more recent work branches out from her folksier roots, weaving elements of rock, jazz and country together with her trademark hook-filled melodies and evocative, passionate vocals. While critics have likened her music to that of a young Joni Mitchell, Mariana counts among her own influences Shawn Colvin, Bruce Cockburn, Dave Matthews, and Ani DiFranco.

Acclaim for Rita Di Ghent & The Sprawl Project
"The Birth of Sprawl is intelligent without coming across like it's trying to be... Rita paints lyrical pictures with color and detachment, pulling you in and leaving you wondering about the hookers, drunks, homeless and di Ghent herself... Who knows < maybe one day they'll make one of those Canadian Heritage commercials about the invention of Sprawl." - Eye Weekly
Lareau Makes Good: Signs Label Deal; Showcase March 31
Hometown Rock'n'Roll heroes Lareau, from Jamestown, NY, will celebrate their debut Rust Records release Changes at a special showcase March 31 at Shawbuck's (212 West Second Street) at 9:30 p.m. in Jamestown, with Special Guests Brandy Lies. (Lareau will grace the stage at approximately 10:30 PM)
Multi-instrumentalist/percussionist Darrin Payne, guitarists Pete Gool, Chris Saxton, bassist Tim Reed, keyboardist Anthony Brown and singer/songwriter Larry Lareau are thrilled to be able to perform in front of the people who gave them their start.
Rust, distributed by Fontana/Universal, signed the band on the strength of their signature sophisticated sound of melodic material, filled with buoyant harmony and complex instrumental interaction. Compared to bands like Ben Folds Five, Three Doors, Ben Harper and Dave Matthews, Lareau is a breath of fresh air in an industry stagnating with repetition.

"Broadband Internet access has experienced unprecedented growth." Greater home broadband use is driving entertainment and lifestyle purchases totaling $413.5 million in 2004, he added, almost double the $217.6 million total of 2003. Hypnogaja Unveils New Acoustic Album Produced By Wendy Waldman, New Video On MTV Overdrive
The Hollywood-based rock quintet Hypnogaja will release their new album, Acoustic Sunset Live At The Longhouse (Union State/Longhouse Records) on May 30, 2006, the follow-up to the 2005 album, Below Sunset, which Outburn Magazine hailed as "enthralling, first-rate modern rock."
The CD, recorded live in November 2005, features new acoustic arrangements of the band's songs and was produced by legendary singer/songwriter Wendy Waldman ("Fishin' In The Dark," "Save The Best For Last"), who also co-wrote the album's brand new bonus studio track, "I'm Not One Of You."
"I've watched this band on its path for years now -- I've seen them grow enormously," writes Waldman in the album's liner notes. "(Hypnogaja's) music caters to no trend -- it belongs to itself, which will make it enduring."
Hypnogaja's story has been steadily building in the last 12 months, as the band's become a full-fledged national touring act whose visibility's been bolstered through prominent film & TV placements (NBC's Las Vegas, UPN'S America's Next Top Model, Touchstone's Cold Creek Manor) and noted press interest (Apple recently ran a feature story on Hypnogaja on the front page of www.apple.com).
In addition to launching Acoustic Sunset, the band is also releasing the video for "They Don't Care," directed by filmmaker Ron Najor. The piece has been picked up by MTV Networks, who will feature it on MTVU, MTV.com and MTV Overdrive (the latter of which is the network's video on demand programming, available in 10 million homes across the U.S. through the Comcast and Charter cable systems).
Rap Recording Artist Challenges Portrayal of Females in Hip-Hop
Where have all of the female rappers gone? March is officially Women's History Month, which gives us all an opportunity to pay homage to our female heroes and look at their accomplishments in retrospect. In examining the landscape of the hip-hop genre and an apparent lack of adequate female representation, observing the past poses a puzzling question for the future. In a genre with a noticeable lack of female voices dominating the mainstream, performing songwriter and female hip-hop/rap recording artist SHEE credits her success as an independent artist to the recording industry shortcomings for her gender and plans to use her voice and popularity to reach out to future the generations of hip-hop females.
Celebrating the recent release of her "Vaginal Erections" album which boasts being a strong woman and accomplishing things irrespective of gender, SHEE welcomes the additional fans and attention stemming from the supply of female rappers in the industry not meeting the demand, however success has been bittersweet for this independent female rap artist. "Young women and girls do not have enough positive roles modelsSas an artist I acknowledge there are WAY more opportunities for aspiring video chicks than there will ever be for females on the mic that aren't singing." SHEE recalls the love she had for songs like "Self Destruction" by the East Coast Rap Allstars as a little girl. "I paid attention when Miss Melody and MC Lyte spit and knew that strong women could stand alongside these men that have something powerful to say. The following generation of young ladies don't have that because the images they see of fema!
les in our culture portray Black women as merely a man's accessory - oversexed, materialistic and image obsessed."
As a guest panel speaker in the 2005 Brooklyn NY Youth Lab held by Best of Brooklyn, Inc and Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, SHEE spoke to a group of teens aged 15-19 on the subject of "Growing Up Creative." SHEE is currently planning an initiative to reach out to young ladies in the interest of helping them build a healthy a self-image. Self described as where street credibility meets business credentials; SHEE was born and raised in the Vanderveer Housing Projects in Brooklyn, NY to parents only 14 years her senior. Despite adolescent years overshadowed with trouble, drugs and crime SHEE went on to earn 3 collegiate degrees by her 22nd birthday and started her own company Sheer Badness Entertainment in April 2004. Experiencing life on both sides of the fence and boasting a solidified fan base as an independent female rap artist, SHEE feels adequately suited to reach out to urban youth and give back to the community. "Hip-Hop is filled with hoochies, eye-!
candy freaks, baby mommas, gold diggers and so onSwomen that do not accurately reflect what it means to be a young Black woman in urban America. I'm here to fill a void and share a perspective that everyone can relate to but its currently unaddressed in music. To have a culture with so many negative portrayals of woman and no counteraction leaves young ladies in a vulnerable and damaging position"
