The Virgins and ASCAP: Did A Performance Rights Organization Do Anything For Us?
In 1995 I moved back to my hometown of Milwaukee with a group of college friends to start a band. We called ourselves The Virgins. Over the next five years this name would prove to be somewhat prescient. We played hundreds of shows throughout the Midwest, recorded one six-song cassette and two CDs, and made a lot of naive assumptions.

CBGB Wins Case Against Eviction

A civil court judge ruled Wednesday that the landmark punk club CBGB's can't be evicted from its Bowery location, saying it shouldn't be punished for not noticing it owed its landlord money.

The ruling was a victory for the club where groups like the Ramones and Blondie defined the punk scene in the 1970s, but CBGB's future is still uncertain. Its lease with the Bowery Residents' Committee expires on Aug. 31, and a renewal remains up in the air.

The executive director of the Bowery Residents' Committee, Muzzy Rosenblatt, said he had not seen the ruling so he could not comment on it. "All we're looking for is a responsible tenant," he said of his group, which provides shelter for homeless people in the building that houses the club.

The dispute involved about $100,000 in rent increases, interest and fees. The club says the increases went unpaid for four years because of a bookkeeping mix-up. CBGB's said it wasn't billed for the increases, but Rosenblatt said the increases were clearly stated in the lease. CBGB's rent is $19,000 a month.

GorillaPop Opens "World Wide Jukebox"

GorillaPop is an extraordinary site with a simple mission -- to connect people around the world through music.

The latest feature to be added to the world of GorillPop is the ability for *anyone* to add links to their favorite songs (authorized only, of course). It's a great way for people to support their favorite artists since GorillaPop is the only social network licensed by ASCAP and BMI.

Centered on its "World Wide Jukebox" GorillaPop can begin introducing new members to other people, artists, and even songs from the moment they hit the Play button. The Unique auto-matching algorithms of GorillaPop can match people based on their listening habits, ratings profiles, or just information they've entered by hand.

And of course, manual A/S/L searches are always available, but even here GorillaPop has raised the bar with:
Artist only searches
Music Matches only searches
Search for songs by artist location and genre(!) (such as - find all pop songs by artists within 100 miles of Nashville)
Playlist searching (e.g. "find all the people who have Prince's 'Purple Rain' in their playlists)

And song searches can be sorted by most popular, most recent, highest rated overall, and highest rated by category.

Wallflowers' Rami Jaffee On New Warren Zevon Tribute CD

Wallflowers organist Rami Jaffee, known for roots-rock stylings in the mold of Al Kooper and Benmont Tench, appears on the new Wampus Multimedia release, 'Hurry Home Early: the Songs of Warren Zevon.' Performing on the Phil Cody rendition of Zevon's "Splendid Isolation," Jaffee contributes a crisp part on the Hammond B3.

Executive produced by Mark Doyon, 'Hurry Home Early' is the third artist retrospective from Wampus Multimedia, who released 'If I Were a Richman: a Tribute to the Music of Jonathan Richman' in 2001 and 'After Hours: a Tribute to the Music of Lou Reed' in 2003. The CD also includes a previously unheard Zevon song, "Warm Rain," discovered in Zevon's personal tape collection and interpreted by his son, Jordan Zevon, with singer Simone Stevens.

Contributors besides Jaffee and Cody include: Matt Cartsonis (Zevon, Van Dyke Parks, Peter Himmelman), guitar on "Splendid Isolation"; Chris Butler (Waitresses), bass on "Reconsider Me"; Last Train Home, appearing in August on CBS-TV's Late Late Show; Neil Luckett, now working with Nirvana producer Jack Endino; Gary Eaton (founding member, Continental Drifters), guitar on "Mr. Bad Example"; Robbie Rist (L.A. power-pop producer known in a past life as Cousin Oliver of The Brady Bunch); and Jordan Zevon, who just released a new EP.

Detroit Junior October 26, 1931 - August 9, 2005

Legendary and beloved blues pianist, vocalist and songwriter Emery "Detroit Junior" Williams, Jr., died at his Chicago home on August 9, 2005 of heart failure. He was 73. Over the course of his 50-plus year career, Detroit Junior led his own bands and appeared as a solo performer, in addition to playing in bands with Howlin' Wolf and Eddie Shaw. He wrote hundreds of songs, had numerous local successful 45s, as well as writing hits recorded by Albert King and Koko Taylor.

He was a wildly entertaining performer in his own right as well, gigging constantly and recording on scores of other artists' albums as well as four full albums under his own name. Two of his songs have become blues standards: "Call My Job," which was a hit for Albert King, and the perennial favorite, "Money Tree." Koko Taylor has recorded three of his tunes: "Tired Of That," "Thanks, But No Thanks," and "Never Trust A Man." His rambunctious personality, raspy voice and untamed stage antics (including playing the piano standing up, on his knees and from underneath the piano) earned him many fans and friends around the world.

Emery Williams, Jr. was already an experienced entertainer and piano player when he came to Chicago in 1956 from Detroit. He was originally from Haynes, Arkansas where he was born on October 26, 1931, and spent his childhood in southern Illinois. He had led his own band, the Blues Chaps, since he was 19, playing clubs in Pontiac and Flint, Michigan. For three years they were the house band at The Circle Club in Detroit, backing touring stars like Roscoe Gordon, Eddie Boyd, John Lee Hooker and Amos Milburn. Milburn was Junior's idol, and his humorous blues about the evils of alcohol inspired some of Junior's best songwriting.

ItsAboutMusic.com Releases 3 David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) Produced Albums By UK Band Unicorn For The First Time On CD

"Blue Pine Trees," "Too Many Crooks," and "One More Tomorrow" by the UK band Unicorn have been lovingly remastered by Pink Floyd sound engineer, Andy Jackson aboard David Gilmour's (Pink Floyd) Astoria studio docked along the Thames. The overall clarity of all of these releases is superb. They were initially released in the mid-70's in The UK on Harvest/Charisma and in America on Capitol Records and were produced by Pink Floyd's David Gilmour who also lends his guitar work to each release.

In addition, each CD contains a bonus track (UK only B-sides that have been unavailable for over a quarter of a century). These are the definitive versions of these albums, repackaged by ItsAboutMusic.com with the original British Hipgnosis-designed artwork that was not available in the US when Capitol issued these albums originally. Each release features extensive liner notes detailing the band's story written by Unicorn historian David DiSanzo.

Unicorn created their own unique take on rock and roll by applying a distinctly British flavor to their country and folk sound. They successfully combined their love of American bands The Byrds, The Band, The Beach Boys, and CSN+Y, a rhythm section weaned on Motown, and Ray Davies' styled songwriting. Their music was sincere and original.
